In Gomel -- the region of Belarus most contaminated by the Chernobyl disaster -- type 1 diabetes has increased 100%. A 2004 study indicates that this type of diabetes is triggered by exposure of the pancreas to radiation.
The state allocates each of the 500+ diabetic children in Gomel, 1 blood test strip per day. (People on insulin need 3 - 10 strips/day) In this photo, Marie Cox of CCPI gives away glucometers and test strips. Your $$$ at work.
