The Door -- an emotional and beautifully told short film made in Chernobyl contaminated lands -- is in the running for an Oscar tonight.
The film is 17 minutes long. You can watch it here. (Double click to expand it full screen mode). The story is inspired by the book Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of the Nuclear Disaster. The filmmakers explain that the film, "starts with an absurd act: stealing a door. This raises a question in the viewers mind, a question that is not answered until the final shot."
In 2004, Chernobyl Heart, featuring Chernobyl Children's Project International, won the Academy Award for best documentary short. The story of Chernobyl is really more about people than it is about the mechanics of the disaster; it continues to register emotionally with all who hear it, yet much of the story remains untold.
